Suggested change to subscription terms

I have seen other software companies (Vegas Video for one) have a very compelling subscription term. If you cancel after a year or two, you no longer get updates, but the software continues to work as if you had purchased an unsupported perpetual license.

Say someone has subscribed for several years, and then comes time for retirement (yes, I'm getting older). If they cancel their subscription, they lose all access to years of work in the software. That's not really fair, especially if they have paid enough in subscription fees to cover a couple of (or several) perpetual licenses. I would like to see all software companies that do subscription services operate like this.

Current workaround

Continue to pay the subscription fee until you die

    Only the subscription model.

The perpetual model has a different loyalty program that is also described on this page, it essentially gives you a discount for your next purchase based on how recently you have purchased the last one.

Thank you very much for that explanation. I guess I never read the details close enough before. That is pretty much exactly what I was asking for. Therefore, I just switched to the subscription model.

Question: Does all the perpetual licenses I have bought through the years count toward that 5 years? Or it is strictly 5 years on the subscription model?

    Hi Michael,
I'll mark this one as "not a feature request" as it doesn't relate to the software itself.

However, I wanted to point you to our loyalty page https://www.captureone.com/en/campaign/loyalty-program
What you are describing already exists: every year as a subscriber you accrue a 20% discount towards a perpetual license. This means that after 5 years as a subscriber, you can ask for a free perpetual license. Do not hesitate to reach out to our customer support team if you want more details about it.

I have seen several versions of this out there in the software development world. Typically after 3 years of subscription you're entitled to exit with a static version leaving off at whatever version you exited on. I can imagine a small fee as well to exit to a permanent license as well as a compensation.
