Request a new feature, or support for a camera/lens that you would like to use in Capture One.
What problem do you see this solving?
The camera I use most often is my Canon Powershot G7X Mark III. It has a built-in zoom lens with extreme lens distortion at wide focal lengths, and less (and different) distortion at telephoto focal lengths. There is no profile for the built in lens of this camera despite the camera being supported by Capture One, and in repeated requests to add a profile for this, Capture One developers/staff showed no interest and only pointed me at the support page for working with unlisted lenses. I have been using that manual distortion correction functionality for years, trying to set up corrections for each focal length. The problem is that I cannot just make a single correction preset for this lens, because the distortion correction settings need to be vastly different at different focal lengths. I can make a dozen presets for various focal lengths manually and try to pick the closest one, but that is very cumbersone/inconvenient to check the focal length of each image, and manually pick the closest preset I made for that focal length. Also, because zoom lenses have infinite possible focal lengths, it's not feasible to make a preset for every possible focal length.
I am asking you to add a feature for creating custom lens profiles for zoom lenses that allow specifying different corrections for different focal lengths, and interpolating between correction factors for different focal lengths based on the focal length of the actual shot the profile is being applied to. That way, I'd be able to just apply the same lens profile to all shots taken with that zoom lens regardless of the focal length of the specific shot. This feature would be very useful to anyone using an unsupported zoom lens, not just my Canon Powershot G7X Mark III. You just adding a lens profile for my camera would solve my problem, but you seem uninterested in supporting that lens, so this alternative approach of allowing users to make their own zoom lens profiles could solve both my problem and the issues of everyone else with different unsupported zoom lenses.
When implementing such a feature to create custom lens profiles with different corrections for different focal lengths of a zoom lens, you should also include a feature to import and export custom lens profiles. This way, users can share profiles they made with others using the same lens.
When was the last time you were affected by this lack of functionality, or specific tool?
This is a huge inconvenience whenever I work with RAW photos from my most commonly used camera (since I can keep it in my pocket).
Current workaround
Are you using any workarounds or other solutions to achieve your goals in Capture One? I make custom correction presets for various focal lengths, but it's a pain to manually check the focal length of each image and pick the right custom preset, and I can't make presets for every possible focal length (I want it to interpolate corrections between presets for neighbouring focal lengths). |
