Merge Multiple Layers into a Single Layer (with Visual Consistency)

Dear Capture One Team,

I would like to suggest a feature that would significantly improve performance and workflow efficiency for style-based editing:

The ability to merge multiple adjustment layers into a single flattened layer while preserving the visual result.

Use Case:

In my workflow, I frequently apply styles that include 8–10 adjustment layers with varying opacity levels and tool combinations. When I apply these styles across hundreds of images, the processing overhead becomes a serious bottleneck. It impacts performance and sometimes leads to instability or crashes, especially on less powerful machines.

Idea:

A "Merge Layers" function could calculate and consolidate the combined visual effect of multiple layers into a new single layer that retains the exact same look, eliminating the need for layered complexity after editing is complete.

I understand that:

  • Layer stacking is not purely linear.

  • Blending, opacity, and tool interactions are complex.

  • Each layer may contain a variety of tools (Curve, Clarity, Color Editor, etc.) that don’t simply “add up”.

But I believe that with today’s computational power and intelligent rendering pipelines, it should be technically feasible to develop a method that can "bake" the combined visual outcome of several layers into one final adjustment layer.

Benefits:

  • Greatly improved batch performance.

  • Cleaner layer structure.

  • Easier management of final styles.

  • Perfect for archiving “flattened” looks or sharing simplified styles.

It could be implemented as a non-destructive command like:

Right-click > Merge Visible Layers to New Layer

Or something similar, while optionally retaining the original layers for safety.

This would be especially useful for high-volume photographers, retouchers, and creative teams working with Capture One Enterprise or workflows involving style libraries.

Thank you for considering this idea!

Best regards,
Daniel
