Request a new feature, or support for a camera/lens that you would like to use in Capture One.
What I propose may already be available, but simply not documented to the extent that I know what is possible. But I tried implementing this and I don't believe it is possible.
First, I'll first explain to the point on how I'd like mobile to work to save you time. Then I'll go into a bit more detail as to the "Why." So that it may aid with understanding.
My perfect workflow would be as follows: To shoot tethered to an iPhone which is in my pocket and is also set up in "Personal Hotspot" mode that will attached to a nearby iPad that would receive the data from the phone including the session information and folders and the images as they come in as a second monitor for checking IQ and culling and ranking.
Why?
1. I don't want an iPad attached to my hip as I shoot. How distracting for me and the subject as I move around and a huge iPad Pro is swinging from my hip. But tethered to an iPhone in my pocket it is out of the way and unseen.
2. But I do want to have time to pause between sets to review images with the subject and make sure we got the shot we're all happy with, but not to cull yet, so we can stay in the workflow.
3. The iPad could have lower resolution previews sent to it from the phone using the hotspot.
4. After the session finishes we can use the iPad to cull and rate photos. I don't want to edit with mobile. I would only edit with mobile in a pinch.
5. At this point I don't need a backup on a hard drive. My camera has two card slots. I have two backups in camera. an SD or CF card is essentially a hard drive. Another hard drive is a third backup. Not needed.
6. Ideally what I'd like to then do is take my camera card and load those images into C1 on my MacBook so I have all the full resolution files in place on the machine I'll use to edit. But I'd like my Macbook to be able to pull the ranking and culling information from the iPad or phone that was done on location, perhaps syncing that info from the cloud. Somehow syncng by Session name and them by file name of each photo.
This would be the ideal mobile workflow for me. I don't often shoot with large staffs and clients on a set. It is usually just me and a lighting assistant, and the subject(s). We shoot very low key as to not raise attention and carry everything in a roller bag so we can quickly and easily move locations for the next set. Being able to shoot tethered into the phone helps keep things inconspicuous so we don't draw a crowd, and so we can focus on the shoot. Having the phone send low rez images to the iPad then assists with double checking IQ and at the end of the day, with Culling and ranking. Then being able to sync it all to the desktop where I'll do my editing afterwards is how I'd like this to work. That would be my dream implementation of mobile.

Current workaround
No workaround at this time, but I will say I've tried tethering to an iPhone 17 Pro with a high quality Lvna cable and my Nikon Z8 and it keeps dropping and picking up connection. An unstable connection is a deal killer for mobile. That is why I'll never shoot tethered wireless, it is just stable. I hope I can resolved the wired connection with my iPhone issue or it will be useless to shoot tethered to an iPhone. |
As I think through this issue, here's a framework that I hope helps you, and yes, I realize you are probably already aware of this.
The cloud should sync everything that does not require full file, RAW images. Comments, culling (moving to trash folder), ranking, color coding, and preview images should all happen in the cloud and seamlessly sync between all my devices (computer, phone, iPad) and in any way. Tethered, wired or without wires. etc.
The high rez RAW images that are in the camera card slots, or if tethered, they are on both the camera and the tethered device. Those you don't want to put in the cloud. Lots of very expensive storage for you folks. Leave it to the photographer to get their RAW images into the correct Catalog or Session. There should be a way for C1 to figure out how to sync the data (lower rezs stuff) in the cloud with the session folders I have and the file names that are imported.
In this way I can manage everything across devices in the way I want and get client input in a perfect way. Hope this makes sense and I hope this helps.
Forgot to attach a photo of what I was trying to do. Here it is. Note the external hard drive is really not needed in this workflow. Again, I've found the wired tethered connection to the iPhone to be unstable even though I have the latest model iPhone and a high quality cable.
