Basically see what Lightroom allows you to do with the metadata. I can write and modify fields. The modify bit is important for certain workflows where camera metadata isn't actually correct (one example is using digital camera to scan negatives, meaning the photo isn't actually from the digital camera, but from a film camera).
GPS is another obvious example of needing to write metadata, as well as lens info (dead lens don't give the camera any info).
Using 3rd-party tools for this is really clunky, and cumbersome.

Current workaround
exiftool, MetaImage etc, outside of C1. This can sometime break C1 if a field like "Camera Make" is modified in the RAW file itself to a make that C1 doesn't support, so it thinks the RAW file is from an unsupported camera. XMPs are ok. |
