Capture One Pro problem - Lost some edits
I have had my share of problems with C1P, but recently I had a problem where I now think I know the cause. There may be a solution also for other users which C1P (you?) can provide?
Hardware
Fast but old computer, life time subscription C1P 23, external hard drives (HDD, no SSD).
I edit and backup on the latter, and that may be the culprit. Back-upping lot of images takes a lot of time, slow slow slow! So speed of hardware and slow connections is an issue. USB 3.0 max speed, mostly slower. Maybe continuous virus checking slows computer down as well?
Problem: Lost some of my edits on the newly named files.
So what was I doing... editing and renaming the files and renaming the folder (all in C1P) all in the same moment (afternoon). (FYI: about 600 files of appr. 50 MB each)
So DO NOT DO THAT!
Reason? The connections between (some) old (raw) image/file names and new image/file names and the settings files were lost.
But I had some setting files with temp_.cos, where * stands for the old file names with extension. But of course I can not link those temp_.cos files to the newly named (raw) images, because I don't know which old name belongs to which newly named image.
I have not yet found a way to combine the settings to the newly named images, maybe the time of capture in the .cos files (as a timestamp, found in the file using a text editor) can be a connection?
C1P is mentioning you can close the message window and it will work in the background, but... it was not working properly... not in my case.
I lost my edits, because C1P was not able to keep up the pace of the changes (because of slow hardware).
And I probably shut down the computer before it was finished, not knowing C1P was NOT finished.
TIPs?
Be aware that C1P may not have finished what is was doing before shutting down C1P and computer. You don't always see that.
Unfinished C1P business can break the links, with edits getting lost because they cannot connect to the right images any more.
Do not do too many different things (edit images, rename image names, folder name etc.) at the same time with too many images. So take your time between editing, renaming images and renaming a folder.
Also take your time closing down C1P and closing down your computer, let C1P finish the job.
C1P improvements
Maybe "unfinished C1P business" in the background can be addressed as a potential problem when someone is shutting down C1P?
Options are?
1 Show a message to the user C1P has not yet finished the job;
2 Store the job somewhere, so the job can be resumed when computer and C1P is restarted;
3 @2: Make sure the links between old and new file names is also (temporarily) stored somewhere, so the job can be resumed when computer and C1P is restarted.
I know my desktop is old and the connection with external HDD drives is slow, but my fast laptop with 32 MB RAM has a smaller screen than my desktop with 4K monitor and also has smaller SSD drive, so I need to work on external drives with the files. And sometimes I work on recent images or old images from years before, so temporarily store the files on an internal drive to work on is not always very practical.
Just knowing that the stuff mentioned above may be a or the cause for problems is for me an eyeopener and maybe for others as well.

Current workaround
Take your time, do not work too fast, or too much at the same time, better save than sorry. |
