We need better and more refined selection tools that compliment and add to the mask tools we have. The mask tools are incredible yet ineffective outside of subjects like humans.
I work with architectural photography and selecting a window is pure pain. It's a lottery getting a good selection, especially if there is anything in the window occluding the view outside.

Current workaround
At the moment the quickest way is different every time. AI-Tool to select the whole window and do a combined luma range mask to select the brightest or darkest parts. Rasterize the selection and go in and manually paint in with the brush tool. And also Refine Edge and so on. With a simple pen tool or free lasso or a magnetic lasso or a polygonal lasso it would be done in 10 seconds. This process takes sometimes MINUTES for every window. The AI-Tool also has too much splash when selecting the corners of the windows. Sometimes it doesn't even select or it totally misses or it bleeds out. And this is only ONE of the problem areas with not having a lasso tool. Every job and every day I miss a lasso tool for various reasons. The AI-Tool has it's place and it's mot Architectural photography at this moment. |
