TIFF/JPEG DENOISER

99% of my professional work is shot on film, and I work with a few professional labs here in Los Angeles. Pretty much any lab you go to is scanning on either a Noritsu HS-1800 or a Frontier SP-3000, and both scanners produce A LOT of CCD color noise. Obviously, grain is an inherent part of film scans, but the CCD noise is separate and can be especially prevalent in the darker areas of an image.

I recently switched to Capture One, and because I do most of my editing on an iPad Pro while I’m on the road, I primarily use the mobile version. The current denoising tool on mobile is practically doing nothing to the TIFF/JPEG film scans I’m working with. I’ve read that it works great with RAW files from modern digital cameras, but I’d really love to see Capture One give TIFF/JPEG files more attention here. Even if the denoising could get 50% as effective as it is on RAW files from modern Bayer sensors, it would make a massive difference for my workflow and for other film photographers dealing with scanner noise. Capture One already has such strong color tools for working with film scans, so having a denoiser that can actually target this kind of noise would make it a much more complete editing solution for film photographers.

Current workaround

I don’t really have a workaround at the moment. I’d rather not have to move my files over to Lightroom after editing in Capture One just to handle the noise reduction, especially since I’m trying to keep my entire workflow within Capture One. I was considering trying the desktop version of Capture One to see if the denoising tool there handles these files better, but ideally I’d like to be able to do everything within the mobile version since that’s where I do most of my editing.
