What problem do you see this solving?
This is not a frequent need, but it would be nice to have it, as a useful/additional professional feature to C1.
A photo diptych or triptych is a single image that usually consists of two or three thematically related but different photographs. Diptych/triptych panels can be placed next to each other horizontally, vertically, or in any other creative combination, and separated by narrow space lines. A diptych can be used to depict split moments in time or a tell story with different elements and juxtapositions.
I needed to make a horizontal diptych of two actions in sport - two photographs separated by a fraction of a second, the beginning and the end of one sports action, in one horizontal image.
Unfortunately, producing a diptych was not possible in C1. The existing C1 tools working with two images (overlay and merge) cannot create one image compiled in C1 from two side-by-side photographs.
I believe it would be not so difficult to create a new tool for the C1 development team, having already overlay and merge options fully developed and functional.
When was the last time you were affected by this lack of functionality, or specific tool?

Current workaround
Are you using any workarounds or other solutions to achieve your goals in Capture One? Actually, I did a diptych in MS Paint with two JPG images, but it does not look very professional to me using such a high-class photo editing software like C1 in order to convert two RAWs to JPGs, export to MS Paint, process two JPGs in MS Paint, and return back to C1. Moreover, the quality of the final image was not so good for the C1 professional standard. |
Capture One is a Denmark based company.
Searching more for PDF/JPG/TIFF/ virtual printing capabilties directly from C1 (with the same purpose of printing/saving a diptych from C1 RAW files to JPG/TIFF), I unexpectedly found a company in Denmark, which has both free and paid versions of the virtual printer for JPG/TIFF/PDF printing. Bullzip PDF https://www.bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php is a FREE version. Bio PDF https://www.biopdf.com/ is a commercial version of Bullzip PDF, with the same developers in Denmark. I wonder if C1 could contact the Bio PDF directly and using their virtual print module, incorporate native JPG/TIFF printing capabilities into C1 printing module, using a license for these virtual print developers from BULLZIP/BIOPDF. That would be a quick and efficient solution (not sure about cost), allowing C1 easy creation of diptych/triptych files in JPG/TIFF formats, and still within the C1 ecosystem. Those guys are reachable at admin@biopdf.com, and their current customers are Pfizer, Merecedes, CISCO, Maersk, Toyota, Toshiba, Philips, VISA, Varta, UN, etc. (from their site, looks very professional).
Thanks to all. After several hours of research of workarounds, my latest findings are:
1. Brian is absolutely right, numerous third-party software working with canvas can be used for creating diptychs, and the Photoshop will be the best/most reputable one; MS Paint is the most uncomfortable, but it is free and does its job; possibly Corel PaintShop (do not know if many people use it nowadays); also, online versions of Canva (Free Online Photo Collage Maker and Photo Editor | Canva); and Fotor (Collage Maker: Make Collage Online for Free | Fotor).
2. Recommended above standard Windows Print to PDF (i.e. a true PDF file) would require a further hassle, converting from PDF to a true photography standard (JPG/TIFF/DNG), with losing some quality, and probably losing the ICC profile.
3. Unfortunately, C1 does not have the option of direct printing to JPG as Lightroom has. I have found a couple YouTube streams, where Lightroom users explain creating diptychs via Print Modules in Lightroom. They use Print module to print the final image to a JPG file. 4. We know that C1 is a powerful alternative to Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom in one package. Sooner or later some useful functions existing in Adobe products should be implemented in C1. If it does not require much programming work, it would be nicer to get new functions sooner.
5. My idea is to produce the final print image of the highest possible quality in C1, with the possibility to save in JPG/TIFF. If merging-overlay modules are not suitable / not OK in the short future for working with canvas, another option would be to improve the print module of C1, allowing direct printing of the final images from RAW files to JPG/TIFF/DNG files (my wish list!).
6. Meantime I have found a possible workaround which I would like to test for image quality, namely printing via a third-party virtual printer inside C1 capable of direct printing/saving to standard photo formats as JPG, TIFF and PNG (besides PDF), directly from C1 Print Module. So far, I have found only one promising candidate, Win2PDF software (USA) https://www.win2pdf.com/features.html#Win2PDF-Pro

I use Print to PDF sometimes. I works well.
In theory you can also convert pdf to jpg using some utility softwares but I ave not tried it and have no idea what happens to quality.
The used to be a Print to Disk facility in Windows but it may no longer exist stand alone.
There is a print to disk program available for images as an application for download but I looked at the info offered on line and the style is somewhat ancient so it may not be entirely compatible these days.
In the print dialog I think you can print to PDF. That might provide you the digital copy you need to share.
Given current functionality (and especially as this sounds like a one-off, even for you) I'd create the images in the finished sizes required then export them as .tiff files. I'd open those files in PS and increase the canvas size for one of them. I'd then copy the second file into the empty space on the enlarged canvas. Size and export as your flavor and you're done.
Certainly no harm in suggesting the additional functionality but if you're looking to do this now, there you go.
Many thanks, Brian, this is good advice from you, if I need to print from C1. I will use your advice when printing double images, this may work.
But in my case, I needed to submit/email one image to someone for a review as a diptych, and I needed to create one file with combined images. Someone may call it a diptych, triptych, or collage - but it must be one final JPG/TIFF/DNG file, to be judged as one work.
That was the question I'm looking for a solution within C1.
368707697437 You can do this now using the print dialog box/page setup, assuming your images are to be printed the same size. Look under the Layout section of the print dialog. Increase the number of rows and/or columns to increase the number of images printed on a single page.
Alternatively, you should be able to access print management software from your printer's mfg. In my case I use Epson Print Manager. Capture One produces a TIFF which I then pull into EPM. EPM allows me to arrange those images to print pretty much any way I want to create a layout.
I needed one diptych image for a photo competition, as a single diptych photo in a series, and not for immediate print. Using specialized printing software might be an option to instantly print two images on one sheet of paper, but this will be a very different approach, ultimately leading to using external printing software. My request was to do/finish everything in C1P, similar as C1 does with overlay and merge processing.
IMHO, a diptych could be considered as a non-merged yet but prepared for a panorama images, not overlapping and sitting next to each other. Or overlay images standing nearby separately.
Is it not possible to use the print functionality to create a layout that emulates a "x"tych style output and print it as a single file or as a single print image if direct printing?
Alternatively save the individual files and use some printer based software to compose what is required for the final output?
This looks like a probe, where is the line/border for editing capabilities - not everything can be done in C1P, so while we would love to avoid adding another software to the process, how far can we go with unification?
Request reads nicely after the update, I'm not convinced yet to support it though.
