Sony a6400 "A" Variant (ILCE-A6400A) support is available starting from Capture One 16.6.4. Please make sure you're running the correct version of the software to work with this camera.
first of all, thank you for the continued improvements in camera support.
I would like to address the case of the Sony ILCE-6400A. Technically, this model is almost identical to the ILCE-6400, apart from a slightly different LCD panel and EU-related USB charging restrictions. RAW files and tethering protocols are the same.
Currently, the ILCE-6400A is supported starting from Capture One 16.6.4. However, in earlier versions such as Capture One 22, the camera is recognized but shutter release does not work because the model string differs from the ILCE-6400.
From a user’s perspective, this situation is frustrating:
The camera is functionally the same.
Support would likely only require adding the ILCE-6400A as an alias for the ILCE-6400.
Users on perpetual licenses of older versions feel forced into an upgrade purely for this reason.
My request / suggestion: Could Capture One consider a more flexible policy for cases where a “new” camera is, in fact, just a minor variant of an already supported model? Even a backport alias in the last maintenance release of the older version would already help a lot of users.
I think this would build goodwill with the community, while still encouraging upgrades for genuinely new technology.
This is needed in 2025 as a result of the "A" model issue as described in https://captureone.ideas.aha.io/ideas/CLR-I-318. Sony released the a6400a with USB charging disabled "to comply with EU charger regulations" (source) but it is otherwise the same camera body as the already supported a6400.
