Feature Request – AI-Powered Noise Reduction with Creative Grain Options Merged

We would like to request the implementation of an advanced AI-powered noise reduction tool in Capture One, similar to what is currently offered by Photoshop and Topaz, but fully integrated into the Capture One workflow.

Key Features:

  • Automatic Noise Analysis: The system should detect the noise level in the image (based on ISO, exposure, and detail) and suggest optimal reduction settings.

  • AI-Based Noise Reduction: Use deep learning models trained on real-world datasets to preserve fine details and textures while removing chromatic and luminance noise separately.

  • Modes:

    • Automatic Mode: Applies optimal reduction based on AI analysis.

    • Manual Mode: Sliders for intensity, detail preservation, and grain control.

    • Creative Mode: Option to add analog film-like grain, with customizable parameters:

      • Film type (35mm, medium format)

      • Grain size and distribution

      • Intensity and contrast

  • Performance: GPU acceleration for fast processing.

  • UI Integration: Dedicated panel “Noise Reduction AI” with real-time preview and before/after comparison.

Benefits:

  • Significant improvement in image quality at high ISO.

  • Faster, more intuitive workflow for professional photographers.

  • Creative flexibility without relying on external plugins.

Current workaround

Since Capture One does not yet offer an advanced AI-based noise reduction system like Topaz or Photoshop, photographers typically follow this workflow:

  1. Built-in Noise Reduction (Basic)

    • Use the Details → Noise Reduction panel:

      • Luminance: Adjust to reduce brightness noise.

      • Detail: Increase to preserve texture, but beware of artifacts.

      • Color Noise: Adjust to remove color blotches.

  2. Selective Masking

    • Apply noise reduction only to problematic areas (e.g., backgrounds) using Layers and Masks.

    • This prevents loss of detail on main subjects.

  3. External Plugins

    • Export the file as 16-bit TIFF and open it in:

      • Topaz DeNoise AI

      • Photoshop with Neural Filters

    • Apply AI-based noise reduction and re-import into Capture One for final adjustments.

  4. Analog Grain Simulation

    • After noise reduction, add grain via the Effects → Film Grain panel:

      • Choose grain type (Silver Rich, Tabular, etc.)

      • Adjust Granularity, Contrast, Impact for an analog look.
