Focus stacking auto capture

What problem do you see this solving?

I'd love to be able to shoot the series of images needed for focus stacking directly within Capture One in an automated way. All the tools are already available in Capture One for it to work; we just lack either the shortcuts to create custom Apple Scripts or an automated feature from Capture One.

It would simply be a way to set the closest and furthest points of focus in the Focus tool, and then ask Capture One to automatically capture the needed images for focus stacking. Adding options such as custom steps and delay between shots would be very appreciated too.

When was the last time you were affected by this lack of functionality, or specific tool?

Today. And every time I shoot product photography, that requires focus stacking.

Current workaround

Are you using any workarounds or other solutions to achieve your goals in Capture One?

– Use Helicon Remote, which works great, but I can't use it while Capture One is open… So it's a constant back and forth through the shoot between the two apps, and it gets quite unpractical when working without a digitec or assistant.

– Use Capture One Focusing tool and tweak the focus manually between each shot – this is great, but takes a long time for each stack to create and requires me to stay in front of the computer, changing something that would be easy to script if shortcuts were available for it.

– Use the in-camera focus stacking tool, but then I can't shoot tethered and have to import files after the shoot – very unpractical in a studio environment

Physically setting the near and far points on an XF camera system causes vibration and as the requestor noted, other cameras require an external program such as HeliconRemote.

This would be a huge help, even if the development time could be justified as a feature exclusive to Enterprise or CH editions.
