Sessions Support

Hello! Are there any plans to implement sessions support in Capture One for iPad?

Which device are you using?

iPad Pro 12.9 2021

What problem do you see this solving?

Slow, inconsistent workflow between mobile and pc.

When was the last time you were affected by this lack of functionality, or specific tool?

Every day.

Current workaround

Are you using any workarounds or other solutions to achieve your goals?

Cloud transfer, except it's extremely slow.

Hi, I’m shooting predominantly for corporate clients on location and I always use sessions. Boeing able to shoot directly into a session on a portable SSD is the one feature in C1 Mobile I really need. Actually, without external SSD support C1 Mobile is pretty useless for me. Exporting all images from my iPad after the shoot and then importing them into my session is a pain in the backside. Even more so, when my iPad has run out of storage and I need to copy the rest of the files from my camera’s SD card. Please add this feature as soon as possible.

Like the desktop I think users need a choice. Session or Catalog. When using a catalog on the device we then need an easy way to get it to the desktop. Being able to copy that catalog to SSD or directly off the device to the desktop improves efficiency. My user community members have generally spoken in the context of a single photographer or small team on location. My personal workflow is as an individual photographer. I do portraits in public spaces and outside people's homes. Tethering into the mobile device and storing in camera both lets me show clients larger previews on the iPad. The in-camera copy is effectively a backup to the mobile device.

Thanks 368108974477, I know the benefits of the solution. What I am trying to collect here is how it could be used for different workflows would use it and what are the problems that we observe today. This can vary if the shoot is happening on location or not, the volume, the team around the photographer, the timing of the delivery. Session support would be convenient for all, but for some people it is a real blocker for using the app on the field.

382987704118 .. anyone who does location work (portraits, editorial, landscapes, travel) will benefit from this. Using a portable drive makes it super easy to move between mobile device and desktop, and portable storage is SOO much faster than internal storage of most mobile devices. Current iPad M2 models have USB-C ports for fast transfer, and most mobile phones now have it too. Asking each photographer who posts here their working conditions doesn't nearly cover all the potential beneficiaries of this. My list above covers large groups of the potential beneficiaries, and I am sure there are more.

Hey 368108974477 thanks a lot! What I would love to collect is real use cases from the field (you guys!) on how lacking session support affects your work. For example: describe what is the photography genre you usually shoot, if you are tethered or not, at what stage you use Capture One on iPad or iPhone and what are you doing when you use the app (tether? import? edit? etc.) , when you use Capture One on your computer, how do you transfer your work now across devices. etc. :) I know it's a lot to ask for, but it would be super useful for me and the team. Feel free to drop me an email if you don't want to add it here. Thanks

    Hi 382987704118

Give the mobile apps the ability to open a Session or Catalog on external SSD or iCloud drive.

This solves many problems for the users and for Capture One.

    • it is faster to switch between mobile device and desktop
    • it eliminates the slowness of cloud synchronization
    • it reduces cost and support of cloud infrastructure
    • it works seamlessly for windows and macOS desktops

    Thanks!

Hello and thanks for the feedback, it makes sense. Hopefully this will be solved to a large degree when our new sync solution becomes available. We will investigate with the team how we can enable session support and external storage but they will not be available in the next few months. I would really love to hear your feedback when our sync solution is released: does it address some of the current pain points? will editing on mobile become more meaningful for you?

I also really feel like the ipad version would be way better if we could use sessions between the desktop and ipad. Currently, I don't really feel that the whole EIP export, then return to Raw with sidecar info style is a good work around when we could just use a session folder across both the ipad and the desktop. Also not really interested in having hundreds of separate catalogs created just to use the ipad. I think having sessions across both applications would be way easier on photographers across all genres and keep things consistent with workflows.

I use the ipad for tethered shooting and would love to have it as a culling / quick edit option on the go. For now, the current workflow makes it too clunky with multiple steps. So, I generally prefer to just work from the desktop and use the ipad for tethered due to this.

Hello Evi, I would like to join the topic as well as this is a big problem for me too and I would like to see Sessions on the Ipad.

IpadPro 12,9" 1TB here, exports are really slow and scary when the tethered catalogue grows above 2k images  with the provided RAW or EIP export tool. We're using Files folder copy and sacrificing the ratings/tags for mid-shoot backups to external SSD and then syncing the final catalogue just to convert it to sessions we use and love on desktops and share with the post staff. Feel free to contact me if you need any more info, thanksl

Hello 381960362138, thanks for the feedback. We are working towards a better solution for transferring work between iPad and desktop. Can you share a few words about your workflow and type of photography ? what do you use iPad for and what for CO on mac/windows? What is your biggest challenge now when you try to transfer your work from iPad to computer?
