Face Focus issues and improvements

What problem do you see this solving?

1. Face Focus creates unnecessary blank above the images and it shrinks the image.

2. Face Focus can NOT be move around.

3. Face Focus doesn't supported and not available on Focus Tool. WHY? It's only available in Culling, Jesus.

4. Face Focus doesn't really focus well on eye or face instead of other body parts and yet you are calling this "AI" feature.

5. Like other tools from the Cull, it can not be moved unless I select pinned or scrollable area which still not allow me to move the tool.

6. Can not enlarge the Face Focus. It's too small to check the focusing or sharpness.

When was the last time you were affected by this lack of functionality, or specific tool?

Day1

Current workaround

Are you using any workarounds or other solutions to achieve your goals in Capture One?

No

Raymond Harrison/ Then how come they keep making issues since Capture One 20 that people can not understand their intension? Their actions already proves it. If they do listen, they wouldn't need to make stupid mobile version of capture one pro and wasting their time and effort. They clearly have no idea what they are doing. Also, I'm not the only one complaining about what they did.

I don't expect immediate respond cause I've been sending requests and feedbacks for a long time. Capture One 23 is a great example of how they are being careless as they added minor updates and yet considered as a major update. Nonetheless, if they can't develop and update properly, people will mad at them which is happening right now.

I can say Capture One Pro can't even do simple stuffs after all and can't really expect professionalism from them anymore as they only seek more money from us rather than fixing and improving their own software. Clearly, they seem to don't care about it for several years.

370130554297 It wasn't clear whether you'd done anything leading up to your improvement request, so my apologies. It's awesome that you're a beta tester! The point is though, if there are a lot of digitechs and photographers complaining, as you are saying, they should be on here upvoting and adding clear, professional comments to your post. That gets attention.

Developers are people too, and insinuating that they're idiots or lazy and then turning around and asking for their help rarely works, I've found. The developers and product managers at Capture One do really listen. They do really care about their product. Yours is only one of many, many voices coming at them each day. Everyone has their own priorities as to what they want them to work on. We all want immediate responses. Unfortunately, that's not reality. Because of the volume, they look at trends, not necessarily individuals. It's nothing personal. That's why you really should concentrate on making your case. I've found that being fact-based, outcome-driven and keeping the emotion out or to a minimum is helpful.

When you get their attention, and much more importantly, they get to a point they agree with you and then prioritize the work (they're a small team with a LOT of priorities and a huge backlog), keep in mind that turn-around time can take months. It's not overnight. It's rarely a few weeks. All of it comes down to making your case.

Raymond Harrison/ I already sent several requests and feedback a while ago and yet, they never either listen or respond. Do you really think that I did nothing?

Currently, Capture One is facing a lot of issues for wasting their time and effort on something else. Beside, I'm an active beta tester providing feedbacks but guess what? They don't care. A lot of digitechs and photographers are complaining and I have no idea what else to say if they don't listen and respond instead of saying we are trying best.

They are different teams (the mobile team vs the desktop team) so blaming your issues on the wrong team or wrong product won't fix your problem. The face feature is new and was just released relatively recently. If you don't like something or like the way it was implemented, I've found that providing detailed feedback in a professional, constructive, outcome-based way goes much further than outrage, faux or real. Sometimes things get implemented, sometimes they don't.

I see your improvement request doesn't have any votes for it yet, so it isn't clear whether there are others who feel the same way you do and are as outraged. Votes are one great way to get on the radar and be listened to. Are you finding others agree with you and are they willing to up-vote your request?

Another great way to be heard, but which is harder and you have to devote the time, is to be a beta tester. That way, you have a way to provide feedback earlier in the process. It requires professional, constructive feedback and yelling rarely works. Insinuating that the developers are idiots isn't usually the best way forward either.

All that said, I actually agree that the cull view / face focus needs improvement. Of course it does - it's new. It has tremendous potential. All AI-based functionality in any software (yes, any software) needs constant refinement and improvement. AI actually gets things wrong more often than most people think. It's not deterministic and it's not magic. The good thing is the team seems all-in on this approach and they've continued to improve the feature since it was released.

Edit: Oooh - the expected downvote. :-)

Denis Huk/ Are you really willing to fix the problem or what? Your software is being pathetic especially since 2023 as you guys aren't fixing and improving anything instead of focusing on stupid iPhone/iPad version of Capture One Pro. This is not professional at all.

Size: Yes I noticed this too. Fixed size is a bit of a troll choice given the possibility of using this on a 4k or 5k screen.

Position: It might be nice to have this feature vertical or horizontal, because let's face it (haha, get it): we shoot portraits in vertical mode.

Quality: Face detection is kind of poor. It doesn't perform well with pictures of musical performers or anyone with a microphone in front of their mouths. I think Google's and Facebook's face-recognition algorithms were more accurate at recognizing faces than humans are, but C1's face detection is clearly not as strong. AI is a slippery slope. If they go that direction, they'll go bankrupt trying to develop AI-powered tools, and the software will become really slow. But, now that face-detect feature is out, they should at least make sure it's ready for prime time.

Tone of voice: you do seem a bit angry/impatient. I'm notorious for the same, but I hold myself to a high standard to make sure I haven't blamed someone for something that was my fault. I understand that taking time out to post about a feature that someone else should have put their full attention into developing is an annoyance. Totally relate. Just, idk, lighten up. I'm sure it's a worthless suggestion, from your point of view. But whatevs, I got nothing else I can say.

    Benjamin,

Yes I have tried it in Beta and I have also suggested some areas for improvement consideration.

I will admit that regular assessment of focus on faces is not something that is mainstream to my selection and editing activity but I think I can understand the need well enough for the purposes introduced so far.

It probably works better (for its currently intended purpose of choosing images to be kept or culled) on something less than a 4k screen at 27 inches. I could imagine the viewing size might be a little small. 4k on a 32" screen might be better.

    SFA/

That does NOT justify the poor feature quality. Adjusting the zoom size is not what I'm talking about. The screen size can't be adjusted. Did you even try before you even comment here? Even on 4K 27 inch display, Face Focus screen is TOO small.

Overall, that's not a good design to start with and it suppose to be better, not worse. #1 issue is already a great example.

    Benjamin,

There are some controls related to select for Face or Eye and also to set and adjust a zoom size. You have not mentioned those but presumably you have found them?

Apart from that I think the initial Use context has been centred on Culling activity and the same sort of requirements during Import selection. Things have to start somewhere and those two activities seem to be where user have been asking for functionality of this type - with an emphasis on identifying faces.

This is described in the Release Notes.

You may think something else is prefereable and that's OK but things have to start somewhere or they will never be released. In this case the most important aspect of the initial release is probably the effectiveness of the Face Recognition functionality. Especially refining it and optimising what it offers.

Extending the availability of the feature maybe be something best saved for future development resource allocation after the core new function has achieved user acceptance beyond beta testing.

    Brian Jordan/

Are you kidding me or what? It could have placed to the side bar just like Focus Tool instead of putting it on the top and make unnecessary space. Is it really hard to make it properly? Beside, I cant even move Face Focus or make it float around.

Since you are the one who did not understand the problem, why do you change the subject? You are wasting my time. Also, I have a right to complain and criticize what they are doing wrong especially since they are messing up with their software too many times.

So where would you have them put FACES?  My comment wasn't about the requesting a feature or feature change.  It was more about the hateful way you phrased your comment.

    Brian Jordan/

Wrong, totally wrong. You didnt even get the point right. You are telling me to tun off Face Focus to remove the gap or space when I need Face Focus?

Whenever you use or turn on Face Focus, it creates unnecessary space or gap above the image and shrink the image instead of making its own space like Focus Tool. Are you sure you are not the one who understand this correctly?

I attached images to make it easier to understand. You see the gap on the top when I turn on Face Focus? That's the issue. You clearly didnt get the point and therefore, I have reasons to outrage and this is not the first time that C1P being poor.

You do realize there is an option (right above the face focus bar) to turn face focus on/off?

Maybe actually learn how to use a feature before you roll out the outrage.
