Option to show missing/offline files

Requested feature

Please add an option to show missing/offline files. This option could be implemented in many different ways, e.g. as a menu item, 'Show missing files' for instance, or as a smart album criterion.

What problem do you see this solving?

With no way of seeing which files are missing (except if it's a whole folder or hard drive that's missing, in which case it will show up as offline in the Library), it's difficult to make sure that there are no missing files or that all missing files have been relocated.

When was the last time you were affected by this lack of functionality, or specific tool?

I don't remember exactly when the last time was I affected by this, but the problem does come up once in a while, and not just for me, as the repeated requests for this feature shows.

Current workaround

Are you using any workarounds or other solutions to achieve your goals in Capture One?

I'm not currently using any workarounds to solve this issue. But I'm aware that there's an Apple Script made by another user that will do something to this effect (link).

How can I see how many images are offline in my catalog and which they are? Is there a filter for this?

    Please add this feature.

If you use the Synchronize Folder option in the Folders tool there is a checkbox to create an album of missing images. Choose the top most level folder(s) and run it. Uncheck the "Remove missing images" box and press the "Show missing images" button. It will create an album of missing ("offline") images for that entire folder tree.

Thanks. We need a way to merge conversations in this forum.

Regarding file paths for missing images, see this request: Relocate multiple images + show file paths for missing images.

Also add a column for volume and path so we can see where capture one thinks an image is located.

Unfortunately (or not) I'm on Windows... :-)

    But thanks, Denis, appreciated.

Hey everyone! There was a similar duplicate post that got archived, however Ricardo de Vicq de Cumptich was kind enough to leave a comment sharing an Apple Script that might help someone over there, so I'm just gonna copy and paste it below:

Try this script, it works fine for me with Cap one 23 and Ventura 13.2. It worked on Cap one 22 and Cap one 21.

But of course, if there was a filter that we could make a smart album it would be much better.

    But until then...

What you're saying (both of you) makes sense. And while it's a shame that this feature is missing, it's understandable that it's not the first priority.

Yes, 1901072955773, I understand what you say.

And there seems to be a lot of technical debt especially on the catalog side of C1. I appreciate the effort of the engineering team to avoid that the software bursts, especially in the case the company is owned by a private equity investor, assuming they are of the typcial short- to mid-term oriented and shareholder value driven kind, then re-enginereing, as a mean to eliminate most of the technical debt and future-proof the software is next to impossible.

I don't expect you to go into details, I wouldn't do either.

369260519517 I won't go into details about this, but the prioritization work we are doing at Capture One is involving more factors than value and effort.

Please also bear in mind that our desktop software has been built over a period of 25 years and as such the estimation of effort that you can intuit from the outside is often very disconnected from our reality. There are incredible efforts done by our engineering team to avoid or eliminate technical debt on an ongoing basis, but some of it will always be present. This point is not specifically about this request, this is a more generic one.

I understand what Mathieu means (thanks for replying 1901072955773), but indeed offline files and users having problems with them have been discussed quite often in the various new and old forums since at least 2015, and not a single improvement has been made in this area, as far as I can remember.

I am not requesting a sophiscated algorithm (e.g. a top folder level "locate files" function reusing the logic from "Exclude duplicates" in the import dialog, or parts thereof, which I believe looks at some metadata and not only at file name.
Some simple things like showing the path of an offline image (or every image) as known to the catalog, or sorting and/or filtering for the offline status would bring us light-years ahead from where we are now (and since a decade or so).

Mathieu points out that there is some value which they recognize, and if you compare that with the effort/cost (presumably low) which is normally done in product management when prioritizing bugs and enhancements, then I can't believe that benefit/cost ratio is so low that nothing happened since 2015.

It's difficult to understand why an application one of whose basic functions is referencing files doesn't have an option to show if any of those files are missing. And it's disappointing to hear that it isn't even planned.

    Hello 369260519517,
My message is not saying that this will not be implemented ever, I am just making it clear that this is not something we are working on at the moment.

We understand the value of it.

The possibiliy to sort by Status, though not ideal (because there is more than one status which contains the question mark), should be easy to implement and it eases the pain of not being able to find offline images a lot:

It's sort of unbelievable that this simple feature, requested since years, and which saves users butt in many cases, will not be implemented.

    Hi everyone,
Thank you for the suggestion - this is not something we are currently working on.

This does not mean this is a bad suggestion or that it will never be adressed, but in an effort of transparency we want you to know that we are not currently allocating resources to solving this issue.

We will revisit the status of this thread if and when it changes.

    1.

      • Some file managers, whether on your computer's operating system or third-party software, provide the option to display missing or offline files in their interface.
      • When this option is enabled, the file manager will show files or folders that are part of the directory structure but are not physically present or accessible at that moment.
      • These files are often represented in this site with an icon or indication to signify their "offline" or "missing" status.
