I would love to be able to make a notation in the Star Rating tool for what each rating means. I don't use stars for order of preference, but for sorting and filtering different types of shots. Often I go back to a session and forget what 1, 2, or 3 stars meant to me at the time. There seems to be room between the Stars and counter for a note to be written here about what the rating mean. 1 star "Daylight Exteriors", 2 Stars, "Dusk Exteriors", 3 Stars, "Interiors with Blue Paint", 4 Stars, "Rush for Client"

As an alternative option, you could use the keywords tool instead? Assigning each type of image (E.g. Interiors with Blue Paint).
If you wanted to use your keyboard to speed up the assigning of keywords you could first use keys 1-5 to star them like you have been doing already, and then assign a keyword to them in bulk afterwards.
Alternatively you could always use session folders to categorise and separate your image types.
Something I do is keep my star rating meanings the same between Projects / Sessions so I don't get confused when viewing an archived session as they all mean the same thing to me.
